API CL-4 and FB-4: the next generation of diesel oils, with FEOTECH solutions available today

First licensing of API CL-4 and FB-4 begins on 1 January 2027. As the industry prepares for the transition, FEOTECH offers a broad lubricant portfolio for commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, including API CK-4 performance-level engine oils.
Additive suppliers prepare for the transition
Lubrizol has introduced its CV1700 additive series to support API CL-4 and FB-4 formulations. Early availability helps oil manufacturers prepare formulations ahead of first licensing.
On 8 September, Afton Chemical announced its HiTEC® 12330 and HiTEC® 12380 platforms. The company highlights wear protection, oxidation resistance, extended drain potential and compatibility with modern emissions systems. PC-12A and PC-12B are the development designations of the categories, rather than the names of these products.
Two categories, different engine requirements
API CL-4
Builds on CK-4, with backward compatibility subject to viscosity and application requirements.
API FB-4
Builds on FA-4: lower-viscosity oils for engines approved to use them, with a focus on fuel efficiency.
New categories do not automatically require a fleet-wide oil changeover. Selection depends on engine manufacturer requirements. A newer API category alone does not justify extending oil drain intervals.
